NEW ZEALAND - Land of Contrasts

New Zealand, an island nation in the South Pacific, offers the visitor an unspoilt, clean, friendly retreat from the pressures of a busy life. It is a land of spectacular contrasts, ranging from semi-tropical beaches in the north to glaciers in the south. The South Island, the larger of the two main islands, is dominated by the Southern Alps, the mountain range that runs virtually the entire length.

This sparsely populated island is a region of highly efficient agricultural production on fertile plains and downlands, but inland there are vast tracts of tussock grassland, dense forests and spectacular mountains, lakes and rivers.

Travel
New Zealand is well serviced by international airlines, the two main points of entry being the international airports of Auckland in the North Island and Christchurch in the South. Internal travel by commuter airlines and road is excellent. Note that New Zealanders drive on the left hand side of the road.

New Zealanders
New Zealand, a former British colony, is governed by parliamentary democracy and retains British traditions of law and customs blended with indigenous Maori culture. The official languages are English and Maori. The population, 75% of whom live in the North Island, are a multicultural mix of Polynesian, European and Asian. New Zealand is an egalitarian society with stable government and a friendly, relaxed population of less than 4 million.
